How to Grade Between Sewing Pattern Sizes

Learn the difference between selecting a supplied size and grading a pattern, and when a paper adjustment is appropriate.

Use the supplied size first

If a product includes multiple sizes, use the file’s size controls or print the selected size. Grading is a separate process and should not be needed when a suitable size is already included.

What grading changes

Grading creates intermediate dimensions between known pattern sizes. It requires accurate pattern measurements, a consistent method and a new cutting layout.

Know when not to grade

Do not grade a pattern with complex darts, pleats or unusual shaping without understanding how those features affect the seam lines. A toile or a patternmaker’s help can prevent a costly mistake.
