Mark the change before cutting
Use a pin or chalk line to mark where the finished length should be. Check whether the shortening happens at the hem, above a seam or through a shaped section.
Protect the construction
Pockets, pleats and facings may need to be moved or reworked. Keep the original line visible until you know how the shortened section affects the rest of the garment.
Test the adjustment
A quick test in inexpensive fabric can reveal whether the new length changes the fit or moves a detail. Avoid cutting the final fabric until the adjusted pattern looks right.
