How to Lengthen a Sewing Pattern

Lengthen a sewing pattern by understanding where to add length and how to preserve the original seam lines and proportions.

Identify the adjustment

Decide whether you need more length through the body, hem or sleeve. The right adjustment depends on the pattern shape and where the finished garment should change.

Keep construction details intact

Pockets, pleats, yokes and facings can move when a pattern is lengthened. Mark the original hem or seam line and work slowly so those details remain aligned.

Test before cutting

Make a small toile or test the adjusted area on scrap fabric when possible. Compare the altered line with the original construction before cutting the final fabric.
